Levelling humps and hollows
Humps and hollows can be very unsightly on the lawn, and humps can cause problems when mowing, leaving bare patches.
Step-by-Step guide
Tools needed:
Trowel
Edging knife
Grass seed (if bare patches are appearing)
1 Cut out an ‘H’ around the hump or hollow with an edging knife. Undercut the turf by about 2.5cm (1in) with a sharp spade and carefully pull it open, trying not to damage or break it.
2 Using a trowel remove or add soil as required, until the soil is level. Replace the turf, check that the lawn is level, then firm down and water well.
TOP TIPS
Level lawns when the soil is moist, meaning the turf will peal back easily, minimising the risk of tearing and cracking.
After levelling, brush a mixture of soil or compost with sand into the cut to help the grass re-bind.
